Deep Carbon Observatory finds massive subterranean biosphere

Despite extreme heat, no light, minuscule nutrition and intense pressure, scientists estimate this subterranean biosphere is teeming with between 15bn and 23bn tonnes of micro-organisms, hundreds of times the combined weight of every human on the planet.

Researchers at the Deep Carbon Observatory say the diversity of underworld species bears comparison to the Amazon or the Galápagos Islands, but unlike those places the environment is still largely pristine because people have yet to probe most of the subsurface.

These Scientists Have Discovered How To Use Electricity To Make Protein From CO2

In a lab in Finland, inside tiny lab equipment roughly the size of coffee cups, researchers are turning CO2 into food. The process–which can run on renewable energy, and requires only a small amount of water and nutrients–could eventually be used in a home appliance to make protein at home, or a production facility in a desert that could supply nutrition in the middle of a famine.

NASA To Deflect Asteroid Away From Earth Using Fridge-Sized ‘Bullet’

NASA has taken the next step in its bold mission to protect the planet from potentially lethal asteroids.

Known as the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), the mission involves firing a fridge-sized projectile at nine times the speed of a bullet at an incoming asteroid.

Scientists ‘Teleport’ a Particle Hundreds of Miles—But What Does That Mean?

Humanity is advancing rapidly towards a place where the news sounds an awful lot like science fiction. In fact, yesterday, Chinese scientists reported that they “teleported” a photon over hundreds of miles using a “quantum satellite.” But this isn’t Star Trek. It’s the real world.

Scientists Have Unlocked The Mystery Of Why Deep Sea Corals Glow In The Dark

If you’ve ever had the privilege of seeing glow-in-the-dark coral you’ll know that it’s one of nature’s most beautiful creations.

Usually found in shallow waters the coral’s impressive ability is actually a form of sunblock that helps protect it from the Sun’s harmful rays.

Predatory bacteria offer potential solution to drug resistance problem

For the first time ever, scientists have used predatory bacteria to kill pneumonia in a rat animal model. The research, published online in mBio, provides evidence that predatory bacteria can be used as a therapeutic, offering a possible solution to the rise of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections.
